10 tips for the novice climber

With these tips, you can get on with it!

Are you a novice climber and not yet experienced in climbing? Don't panic! In this blog we will help you on your way with our tips for novice climbers when visiting Adventure City Rotterdam.

1. Listen carefully to the safety instructions

Safety first! So also as first tip. In our zip and climbing park, safety is of paramount importance. We work exclusively with safe equipment and our climbing courses are also thoroughly tested and safe. Thanks to the safe restraint system, it is not possible to remove your harness at height until you are back on the ground with both feet. In addition, we only employ experienced instructors who will at all times give you an explanation on how to climb safely before you start. Listen carefully to their tips on how to use the climbing harness, fuses and other veiligheidsmaatregelen.

2. Start with a simple route

At Adventure City, we have klimparcoursen for different levels. The highest ones go up to 20 metres, but you can also climb just above the ground. In addition, our highest climbing courses are also more challenging with difficult obstacles. So it's not just the height that can be a challenge. Therefore, start with an easy route. Once you are familiar with the altitude, equipment and climbing, you can naturally climb more challenging routes.

3. Use your body

Body is not only a lot of fun, it is also a sport. You need to get going! Don't rush the climbing courses, but masterfully. Use your body. Tighten your belly while climbing and pay attention to your hand- and footwork. Put your feet down as fully as possible and hold on tightly with your hands.

Pro tip

One of the most important techniques for climbing is to use your legs instead of your arms. This is because you are much stronger with your legs! Deliberately put your feet down on the climbing handles and try to distribute your weight as fully as possible. Then push off with your legs and pull with your arms. This will prevent fatigue.

4. Take your time and stay calm

Haste, is seldom good! This proverb certainly applies when climbing. Before you start your climbing route, take a look at what obstacles you will encounter. Can you handle them? Yes? Okay... let's go!

Is it still exciting at the top? That is quite normal. Take your time, take a few breaths and stay calm. Take your time to climb. Even if there are people behind you. There's no rush and you'll find you have more control if you stay calm. You can do this!

5. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes

Comfortable clothing is very nice with climbing. Think sportswear, but jeans will do as well. Tight clothing is better than loose clothing. Long dresses or wide vests are better left at home. Sturdy shoes are also recommended.

Do I also need special equipment?

The sport of climbing has become increasingly popular in recent years, both in climbing halls and bouldering. If you are interested in the sport of climbing and get more into it, you will soon find that you need a lot of your own gear and materials. Think special shoes, chalk for your hands or equipment for climbing. At Adventure City, you won't need these items. We have everything you need ready at our zip and climb park in Rotterdam. No need to buy expensive equipment. Perfect for the novice climber!

6. Take breaks

Climbing is intense. And Adventure City is big. With 2000m2 of indoor and 5000m2 of outdoor zip and climb fun, it's tempting to want to try the whole park at once. But take your time and give yourself a break, especially if you notice your body is getting tired and/or you have less grip.

7. Get together with friends or family

Climbing is even more fun when you do it together. You can encourage each other, give tips and help each other overcome your fears and still do that challenging adventure, for example the freefall quick jump 20 meter. This way, climbing also immediately becomes a social activity. Apart from that, of course, it's also just fun and you can enjoy the ziplines and other adventures together!

8. Stay hydrated

Whether you climb indoors or outdoors and in summer or winter (as we are open year-round), make sure you drink enough. Especially during intense activities like climbing, it is important to stay hydrated.

9. Enjoy the experience

Adventure City is more than just a climbing park - it's an adventure! Whether you climb indoors or try the outdoor zip lines and courses, remember it's all about having fun and having a great experience.

10. Ask for help if you get stuck

If you get stuck during a route or don't know the best climbing technique, feel free to ask for help. Adventure City's staff are there to guide you and make sure you have a great time.

Have fun with your outing at Adventure City!
